DESIGNER NAME: David Alford BACKGROUND: Zimbabwe
The goal of the brand is not only working with the in-house team, but to spread our knowledge, ideas and processes to the wider upcoming Fashion community within Zimbabwe and the diaspora. This was demonstrated when the team contributed to the facilitation of the Zimbabwe Young Designers Program 2016. A program that educated designers with no previous experience in concept development, design, pattern cutting and construction.
COLLECTION INSPIRATION FOR MBFWCT
I have always had infinity with the ocean and water, and always held a big interest in aquatic life. The inspiration came from an article I stumbled across by The Guardian in which it explained how the Great Barrier Reef is diminishing to a point of up to 67% in certain areas with it suspected to take up to 15 years to recover if at all. The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and has taken somewhere in the region of 25 million years to develop to its present day state.
Many contributing facts have caused the demise of the reef, both man- made and natural causes and it was this idea of two polar opposites that made me begin to look into how I could bring a collection together that resembles the process of something living and dying.
AIMS/ HOPE FOR MBFWCT
After showing across Africa in 2016 it only seemed fitting to expand and take the brand to South Africa in 2017. I believe Cape Town Fashion Week is the perfect platform to come into contact with buyers, journalists and bloggers, people who we can hopefully work with in getting our clothes into publications. I am also always looking and excited to work with new creatives throughout the industry and hopefully see this as an opportunity to work with a new network of film makers and photographers etc who are doing great work in South Africa.
