#MBFWCT17 Designer Alert Black Trash

“Fashion is everywhere. We are all models and the world is a runway.”

Kutlwano Mogojwe

For Black Trash, fashion is a passport to creativity and has provided a profitable passion, as well as an opportunity for self-expression. Fashion lives and breathes differently across cultures and continents, and Gertrude Motopamele and Kutlwano Mogojwe’s birthplace of Botswana has afforded them the opportunity to pursue their passion for fashion without any religious or cultural restrictions. With her extensive experience in Fashion Design and Marketing, and his Creative Direction and Design paired with Strategic Marketing, Gertrude and Kutlwano are the Design duo behind the business that is Black Trash.

With a vision to take African fashion abroad, Black Trash believe that the demand for the African aesthetic internationally will grow exponentially over the next decade, and are inspired by designers that bring something new and interesting to the fashion industry.

Kutlwano’s greatest inspiration in becoming the person he is today is his wife and business partner who has been instrumental in building the Black Trash brand, revered for the manufacturing of high quality garments.

Edgy, chic and in constant pursuit of a new fashion handwriting, Black Trash caters to the contemporary individual who juggles a busy lifestyle and isn’t afraid to bend the rules of fashion.

Winning a number of international awards including the International Fashion Designer Award in Toronto, Canada in 2014 and the Fashion beyond Boundaries Award in 2015, when the Black Trash duo are not designing, they’re travelling, collecting inspiration wherever they go.

As a vehicle inspiring the youth of Botswana, they are passionate about the employment opportunities that the fashion industry affords the youth, who face many challenges entering the marketplace. Facing obstacles of their own, Black Trash are challenged by distribution channels as well as penetrating the retail market, but continue to work on improving these channels, and believe that a platform such as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town 2017 affords African designers unparalleled opportunities for distribution and retail.

Working in the world of fashion, Kutlwano has grown from his humble beginnings as an aspiring designer to a dynamic entrepreneur with a vision to see Black Trash available in boutiques not only in Botswana, but also in South Africa and beyond.

With a Collection woven with the whimsical, we look forward to experiencing Black Trash at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town 2017 taking place from the 7th-8th April 2017.
