“It’s not a revolution on fashion, it’s a revolution on lifestyle.”
Raising awareness of the true cost of fashion, showing the world that change is possible, and celebrating all those involved in creating a more sustainable future is what Fashion Revolution is all about.
For South African Co-ordinator, Tammy Nicol, fashion is freedom of expression, and as an integral part of Fashion Revolution South Africa, Tammy believes in fashion as an industry which values people, the environment, creativity and profits in equal measure, and knows that it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that this happens.
After a whirlwind adventure of fashion, film and extensive travel, Tammy and fashion found a way back to each other through the Fashion Revolution movement – a movement within the industry that gives back and creates awareness and most importantly encourages the support of local creatives.
Combining her passions for the planet, people, culture and fashion, Tammy has found her fashion niche within this space, and with both her parents being activists in the 1980’s, she believes that this is where her passion for freedom of expression was birthed.
Hosting dress up parties for as long as she can remember, her dress up box was where her love of fashion was born, and today the Fashion Revolution and its future excites Tammy, as the sustainability of fashion and its possibilities are endless, with people making statements daily by what they wear and how they wear it.
Inspired by Vivienne Westwood’s Climate Revolution Campaign, Iris Apfel’s individuality of expression, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen for their theatricality in fashion and Livia Firth, Orsola de Castro and Carry Somers who are behind the Fashion Green Movement and Fashion Revolution promoting ethical and sustainable fashion; Tammy is honoured to have the opportunity for Fashion Revolution to participate in Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town 2017.
She believes that this platform has enabled her to reconnect with her younger self, who wanted to make a difference in the world. Based back in Cape Town has surrounded her with the power of palpable African creative energy, which in turn inspires her to use Fashion Revolution as a platform to inspire the youth, giving them a own voice and channelling their creativity.
Her greatest challenge has been creating change within an establishment, but staying true to herself and her ideals has enabled Tammy, together with Fashion Revolution to forge on and make a fashionable difference.
Fashion Revolution will present #africaintrend at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town 2017, and the opportunity to come together as a team to create something and share it with others on a curated platform that encourages creativity and freedom of expression, is a dream come true for Tammy.
We look forward to celebrating sustainable fashion with #africaintrend by Fashion Revolution at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town 2017 taking place from the 23rd-25th March.
