The most interesting looks at Netflix’s ‘Kings of Joburg’ red carpet premiere

One night that people in the entertainment industry look forward to is the red-carpet premiere of a major film or television series. Last week was no exception, as Netflix premiered the second season of the South African action series, ‘Kings of Joburg’.

A long time in the making, the African film and television industry is finally getting the recognition it deserves with grand red-carpet premieres. And that was the case at the ‘Kings of Joburg’ premiere held at Rosebank’s The Zone.

From sleek suits to glamorous gowns, the stars of the show and other celebrity guests in attendance, made sure to impress on the red carpet.

The red carpet is one of the most important ways for celebrities and fashion designers to collaborate. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship that helps both parties promote themselves. If everything goes according to plan, the celebrity gets to be on the best-dressed lists and celebrated for their sense of style. Meanwhile, the designer attracts more clients who want to look like their favourite celebrity.

West African celebrities have always been ahead of the game when it comes to red carpet fashion. South Africa was lagging – until now. The ‘Kings of Joburg’ premiere was a beautiful display of African red-carpet pageantry at its finest.

It was a welcome change from the previous years when South African celebrities would show up to red carpets with nary any effort. It seems those days are long gone.

It appears that South African stars are taking their style seriously. And as the world increasingly looks to Africa to find its next major stars, image has become even more important.

Here are some of our favourite looks at the premiere

Connie Ferguson

Connie Ferguson looked every inch the leading lady as she strode down the red carpet. Dressed in a sleek bedazzled tuxedo by David Tlale, Connie radiated confidence and style. Tlale’s update on the classic Le Smoking look was the perfect choice for Ferguson, who exuded chicness and sophistication. With her hair pulled back into a sleek, low ponytail, her greys taking pride of place, Ferguson was the epitome of glamour. All eyes were on her as she made her way down the red carpet, stopping to pose for photos and greet fellow guests and fans.

Zolisa Xaluva

Zolisa Xaluva, who plays the lead in the series, turned heads with his outfit, a modern approach to menswear. The actor is quickly becoming one of the most stylish men in South Africa. He turned to Lindani Styling for the premiere and the results are amazing. He wore a sleek, tailored high-collared wrap jacket with a white side-tie, which was a break from the usual suit and tie. His trousers were black but had red piping down the sides for a further edge. Overall, it was an incredibly sophisticated and polished look, showcasing Zolisa’s flair. It looks like we can expect much more from him in terms of fashion as his career continues to take off!

Nambitha Ben-Mazwi

The actress is known for her sense of style and her love of the red carpet. It’s no surprise that she’s been nominated for the prestigious SA Style Awards. Nambitha turned to Gerrit Pienaar to design her gown for the premiere, and he didn’t disappoint. The hot pink asymmetrical ball gown with a thigh high slit was a showstopper and it was evident that Nambitha loved it. As she walked down the red carpet, all eyes were on her.

Thapelo Mokoena

Thapelo Mokoena and his wife Lesego Tshepang always look like they just stepped out of a fashion magazine. They are the epitome of style and class. Last night was no different as they arrived at the event looking like two models off the runway. Thapelo wore high waisted white trousers with a cropped hem, a simple white t-shirt, and a striped light blue linen blazer by House of Crouse. Lesego wore a sequined lemon-coloured cropped sweater with a high waisted maxi skirt by Floral Raffia. They both looked stunning and everyone at the event couldn’t help but stare at them in admiration. It’s no wonder Thapelo is considered one of the most stylish men in the world. He always looks perfectly put together, no matter what the occasion is.

Connie Chiume

The Black Panther star is one of the few South Africans who have experience a Hollywood red carpet event and it showed. She wore a buttercup yellow confection of a gown designed by Zamaswazi. The heavily beaded and tiered gown had structured folds that protruded like origami. Talk about drama! The gown was a statement to her star power.

Luthando ‘Loot Love’ Shosha

Loot Love is known for being a style trailblazer, so it is not surprising that she would take an unconventional approach to her look. A printed dress by Ezekhetho caught everyone’s attention when she arrived on the red carpet. She was wearing a fusion of a double-breasted suit and a ballgown, which was designed with wide lapels to reveal her décolletage. One of the most interesting lo
