AFI Fashion Experience: A Must-See for Fashionistas and Horse Racing Enthusiasts
AFI Brings African Fashion to the Fore at the Durban July
Imagine a day where you can witness the best of African fashion, mingle with celebrities, influencers, and business leaders, while enjoying the thrill of horse racing. A day where people from different walks of life come together to crown the fastest horse in the continent? Why, it’s the Durban July of course.
Few events are as loved as the Durban July. For nearly 130 years, thousands fill the Greyville Racecourse, some in search of fortune and others to cement their fame. Known as Africa’s Greatest Horseracing Event, it one of the most attended events in the continent.
Last year’s event coincided with the return to form for the Durban July. With a new name (Hollywoodbets secured the naming rights), Covid-19 subsiding and people ready to celebrate life again, there was an air of expectation.

While the horse race is the main attraction, the Durban July is also one of the biggest fashion and party events in the continent.
Here are 5 reasons why you should not miss the event this year.
1) THE AFI FASHION EXPERIENCE
The AFI Fashion Experience with Gemelli at the Durban July has become one of the VIP enclosures to be seen at. Last year’s AFI Fashion Experience was attended by Mzukisi Mbane or Imprint ZA, stylist to the stars, Thobeka Mbane; luxury influencer, Siyanda Bani and brand genius, Jay Badza. There were performances by Nasty C, and Blxckie. AFI produced a fashion show featuring Durban’s top models wearing garments by David Tlale, Seditsi, K Works, A Cognoscenti, Fabro Sanz, Masango, Franc Elis, Suitability and Otis Seflo. This years’ experience will feature a fashion show with designs from the 2023 AFI Finalists, AFI’s House of Nala brand and a number of Pan-African luxury designers.
2) THE FASHION
With the theme being ‘Out of this World’ we are expecting attendees to take it to heart. And luckily for them, there are many references that can be used to help come up with a theme and event appropriate outfit. Whether it’s Beyonce’s disco themed fashion from her Renaissance World Tour that also fits as an extra-terrestrial look; Malondie and Scalo’s collections at Cape Town Fashion Week that were inspired by the galaxy; or even metaverse themed accessories that will set you apart. It’s all about making a statement, while looking chic.

3) THE FUN
Some of the biggest musicians in the continent have performed at the Durban July and that remains the case this year. From established acts like Blxckie, Mafikizolo and Big Zulu, to leading DJs like Lerato Kganyago (LKG), Lamiez Holworthy and DJ Tira, it’s going to be a day of letting your hair down and partying like a rockstar. Blxckie will once again perform at the AFI Fashion Experience, with LKG, Lamiez Holworthy and DJ Merlon hitting the decks.
4) THE FOOD
Gemelli is famous of its menu which has led to the restaurant winning a number of accolades. The restaurant has carved its niche in the industry by creating dishes that are not only delicious but also visually stunning. With an emphasis on using local ingredients, and fusing traditional Italian recipes with modern gastronomic techniques, Gemelli has succeeded in crafting an unforgettable dining experience. Expect to be blown away by the menu at this year’s AFI Fashion Experience with Gemelli.
