Beauty Trends by MAC Cosmetics at the AFI Masterclass

AFI Insider

The AFI Masterclass officially set the tone for Cape Town Fashion Week: The Edit SS24, delivering an inspiring beauty trends report led by Mokgadi Shogole, the National Artist for MAC Cosmetics South Africa. The AFI Masterclass was powered by the Huawei Watch GT5 Series.

In a world-class presentation at the Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Racecourse, Shogole offered an exclusive preview of the beauty looks set to dominate the runway shows at Cape Town Fashion Week.

With over a decade of experience in the industry, his expertise and infectious energy had the audience captivated from start to finish.

At the heart of Mokgadi’s presentation was a revolutionary highlighter from MAC Cosmetics that adapts uniquely to different skin tones.

“This highlighter is special,” he explained. “On my skin, it reveals a purple undertone, but on Amira here, it transforms into a soft pink. It’s a product that celebrates individuality.”

Demonstrating on a model, Mokgadi showed how the highlighter could be layered for a natural glow or intensified for a dramatic effect, making it a versatile tool for any occasion.

Mokgadi emphasised the importance of extending the glow beyond the face, ensuring a harmonious finish across the body. “We all want that gorgeous, dewy face, but what about the rest of you? Your body deserves to glow, too,” he said with a smile.

His step-by-step advice included:

  1. Hydrate First: Start with a lightweight lotion to prep and nourish the skin.
  2. Add Glow Strategically: Apply the highlighter to high points like the collarbones, shoulders, and legs. “This is perfect for those beach moments in a bikini or a glamorous evening dress,” he shared.

Mokgadi reminded the audience to match the glow of their body to their face, avoiding any “ashy” inconsistencies.

The masterclass wasn’t just a tutorial—it was a glimpse into the future of beauty. Mokgadi revealed that glowing, healthy skin and multidimensional products would continue to be staples, but he kept the details of January’s upcoming trends under wraps. “I’d love to tell you everything, but let’s save some surprises for the new year,” he teased.

As part of the AFI Masterclass, Shogole’s presentation embodied the mission of Africa Fashion International: to celebrate the intersection of beauty, culture, and innovation. AFI’s collaboration with MAC Cosmetics highlights the importance of creating products and trends that resonate with African audiences while maintaining global appeal.

Attendees left with invaluable insights, including practical tips to enhance their beauty routines and an appreciation for products that adapt to diverse skin tones.
