Winning the AFI Best Styled Artist award at the Metro FM Music Awards isn't just a nod to a killer wardrobe; it's a cultural stamp, a declaration that your style sings as loud as your hits.

When the nominees were announced in February, Oscar Mbo shared how winning the category last year was a major moment, especially since he takes fashion seriously. 

“Fashion has always been a way to elevate my brand as a musician without even saying anything. It’s about showing people who I am—there’s a difference when you put me next to everyone else."

But Oscar isn't alone; he's up against a lineup of artists who understand that what you wear is just as important as what you play.

And, like Oscar, DBN Gogo and Murdah Bongz return as nominees this year. Joining them are Focalistic and the exciting newcomer, MaWhoo.

And she has leaned into fashion like few other DJs have. She is a master of blending nostalgia with contemporary street style.

Her style is a kaleidoscope of bright colours, playful accessories, and bold patterns, which, dare I say, mirrors the infectious energy of Amapiano. 

It's no surprise she's a muse for South Africa's leading fashion brands like Maxhosa Africa, Thebe Magugu, and Rich Mnisi, who have recognised her ability to fuse high-end design with authentic street culture.

The reigning champion, Oscar Mbo has always showcased refined elegance with his style.

Few have had a year as prolific as MaWhoo, a newcomer to the AFI Best Styled Artist category.

One way to describe her is that she is a true style chameleon. She effortlessly transitions between edgy and avant-garde looks to Maskandi attire, showcasing her versatility and cultural awareness.

Her ability to adapt her style to diverse settings, from Amapiano events to high-fashion red carpet events, has garnered her a dedicated fan base.

She changes her style to fit any event and audience she is performing for. She is a welcome surprise to the category. 

Focalistic

When Focalistic sang about “Skete sela sa di rough dance mahn” on the smash hit Biri Marung, no one was surprised. Because he understands and loves fashion. And when people were doing the dance challenge to his infectious verse, they wore a specific skirt- a pleated tennis skirt.

The Amapiano star has embraced global street style. His travels have broadened his fashion horizons, and he seamlessly blends international trends with his unique South African flair.

Bold prints, statement sneakers, fabric textures, and custom pieces define his style aesthetic, each look reflecting his energetic personality and his role as a youth culture influencer. Which is expected as the self-proclaimed "President ya Straata"!
