Our Favourite Looks at the Metro FM Music Awards

Ranji Mangcu

For decades, Metro FM has been the heartbeat of popular culture in South Africa. It breaks up the office humdrum during the week, and is a soulful fixture in households across the country on Sunday afternoons.

Over decades, Metro FM has mirrored the innovations and cultural consciousness of South Africans, from the early days of Kwaito, spearheaded by the likes of Oskido and Boom Shaka – both honoured with Lifetime Achievement Awards this past weekend – to the vibrant present of homegrown Jazz, RnB and Hip Hop artistry.

Where music communicated our locality on a sonic level, style was how our predecessors visually communicated a spirit of cultural and philosophical renewal. A vibrant, empowered, and optimistic outlook.

Countrywide, the Metro FM Awards evening is an annual opportunity to celebrate that legacy with the fanfare and elevation that it deserves.

The Best Dressed List

Hosted by Africa Fashion International, in partnership with Metro FM, the AFI Metro FM Awards Black Carpet was a star-studded affair that demonstrated local fashion excellence.

Oscar Mbo

Famed house DJ, Oscar Mbo, took home the award for “Best Styled Artist”, sponsored by Africa Fashion International, and received the award in a manner befitting it. In addition to Mbo, several attendees rose to the occasion, putting several local designers on the map in the process.

Kuhle Adams

The enigmatic Kuhle Adams was a joy to share the AFI Black Carpet with. She stole the show in a dazzling silver two-piece by Johannesburg-based label, Tailord Black (@tailordblack on Instagram).

Phupho Gumede

Our enchanting co-host of the AFI MMA Black Carpet, Phupho Gumede, wore a leather piece from Madonsela Fashion and Design House. Gumede’s outfit spoke to the theme in a powerful way: Small illustrations reimagined ancient cave paintings in golden thread, lining the hood and hemline. Gumede’s look spoke to the future-focused theme by referencing a key part of South African history.

Zanele Potelwa

5FM DJ and Express TV presenter, Zanele Potelwa, was celestial in a black velvet gown by AFI Privé. Angular, and made of a smooth and glowing velvet, luminescent beading was littered across the piece, speaking to the theme, Black to the Future, while staying true to AFI Privé’s elegant and elevated aesthetic.

DJ Sabby

We couldn’t put it any better than the designer himself. AFI Privé’s Menswear lead, Thulani Mlambo, describes the bespoke black brocade suit worn by DJ Sabby at the Metro FM Music Awards as a love letter from AFI Privé to the beloved Metro FM DJ – “giving him his flowers”. Embellished with black appliqué flowers and mirror details, the gesture behind this custom piece is as strong as the piece itself – “giving him his flowers” to wear and take with him wherever he went that evening.

LootLove

From the Black Carpet to the stage, every single outfit change by Metro FM presenter, LootLove, was mesmerising. Changing from one breathtaking couture piece to the next, it’s safe to say her radiance magnified with each look. One particular favourite amongst Team AFI, was a showstopping custom piece by local designer, Orapeleng Modutle.
