Teko Modise, celebrated footballer and style icon, made his debut on the runway at Cape Town Fashion Week, walking at the AFI Privé show.
The event, which launched the brand’s signature summer collection, stood out as one of the highlights of Cape Town Fashion Week. Modise’s confident stride and undeniable presence drew applause from the audience, solidifying his seamless transition from the football pitch to the world of high fashion.
This moment was no coincidence for Modise, who realised early in his football career that fashion could be a powerful branding tool.
Known for his sharp sense of style, Modise strategically used fashion to expand his personal brand, making himself desirable to sponsors and appealing to a diverse audience.
His efforts paid off, earning him a spot among GQ South Africa’s Best Dressed Men during the height of his footballing career.
In a recent interview with the AFI Insider, Modise reflected on his deep connection with fashion: “I fell in love with fashion when I was around 12. Back then, well-dressed people represented success, and I naturally gravitated toward that.” This understanding of style as a symbol of success became a key part of his personal and professional journey.
For Modise, fashion is not just a tool but a language. “I’m not someone who uses too many words, so fashion allows me to express myself without having to say much,” he said.
Whether donning sneakers or suits, Modise has cultivated a reputation for versatility and elegance. However, it’s his boundary-pushing style moments that truly stand out. “The day I started pushing boundaries and breaking free from the do’s and don’ts of fashion, I found my own niche and style,” he explained.
Modise’s runway debut was a culmination of his love for fashion and his willingness to embrace new challenges.
“This is my first time working in fashion, and I’m very nervous but excited. As a kid, I never imagined this happening. I’ve always been fascinated by clothes, but I thought I’d be behind the scenes, not on the runway,” he admitted.
Beyond personal accomplishment, Modise hopes his foray into fashion inspires others. “Being considered for this was huge for me, and hopefully, it creates excitement and opens doors for others, especially former footballers, to explore their love for fashion,” he shared.
The AFI Privé brand, known for celebrating African luxury and craftsmanship, provided the perfect stage for Modise’s debut. The audience witnessed not just a collection launch but a symbolic moment where sports and fashion intersected seamlessly.
