Meet Xaviera Moloi-Mtetwa- Host of AFI's new podcast

AFI Insider

Fashion, music, and storytelling collide in AFI’s Threads & Thoughts podcast, hosted by the multi-talented Xaviera Moloi-Mtetwa.

A musician, creative entrepreneur, and fashion enthusiast, Xaviera brings a fresh perspective to conversations about African fashion, culture, and innovation.

In this Q&A with AFI Insider, she shares her vision for the podcast, the dynamic relationship between music and fashion, and the future of African creativity on the global stage.

Threads & Thoughts aims to showcase the best minds in African fashion and creativity. What inspired you to take on this role as host, and what unique perspective do you hope to bring to the podcast?

I’ve always believed that fashion is more than just clothing. It’s storytelling, culture, and a reflection of who we are. As a musician and creative entrepreneur, I’ve experienced firsthand how different art forms intersect to shape narratives.

Hosting Threads & Thoughts allows me to bring a fresh perspective, blending fashion with music, culture, and personal storytelling to create meaningful conversations that go beyond aesthetics.

As a musician who has performed at AFI’s fashion weeks, you have a unique vantage point on the intersection of music and fashion. How do you see these two creative worlds influencing each other in the African context?

Music and fashion are inseparable. They both set the mood, create movements, and influence culture. In Africa, we see this fusion in how artists use fashion to express their sound and how designers use music to bring their collections to life.

From Amapiano stars shaping street style to haute couture inspired by Afrobeat royalty, it’s a symbiotic relationship that pushes creativity forward.

What are your hopes for Threads & Thoughts in terms of shaping the narrative around African fashion and creativity on a global scale?

I want Threads & Thoughts to be a platform that redefines how the world sees African fashion, not just as traditional or niche but as a powerhouse of innovation and influence.

Through deep, meaningful conversations, I hope to showcase the designers, artists, and visionaries shaping the industry and ensure their voices are heard globally.

Africa is home to rich cultural influences, especially in art, music, and design. How do you see these influences shaping contemporary African fashion, and how can they be preserved and promoted?

Contemporary African fashion is rooted in tradition yet boldly reimagined for the modern world. We see ancestral weaving techniques merged with futuristic silhouettes, beadwork on high-fashion runways, and local fabrics transformed into global trends.

The key to preservation is education—documenting our history, uplifting artisans, and ensuring that as fashion evolves, it remains authentically African.

Threads & Thoughts will feature fashion entrepreneurs, musicians, TV stars, and other creatives. How do you see the cross-pollination of ideas and collaborations between different creative disciplines benefiting the African creative scene?

Collaboration is how industries grow. When a designer partners with a musician, they tap into new audiences. When a filmmaker incorporates fashion storytelling, they create iconic moments.

These intersections create fresh opportunities, push creative boundaries, and ultimately help African talent gain more recognition and commercial success worldwide.

What do you hope people take from Threads & Thoughts?

I hope listeners feel inspired, informed, and proud of African creativity. Whether they are aspiring designers, music lovers, or just curious minds, I want them to see Africa as a global force in fashion and culture.

The first episode of Threads & Thoughts launches on Friday, 02 May, 2025
