Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life

Bill Cunningham

This statement certainly resonates with fashion fanatics still strutting in the abyss of these abysmal times.

The Covid-19 Pandemic has certainly sparked a new fashion trend with the compulsory use of facial masks worldwide. Although the rather essential accessory was never meant for fashion statements, one can’t help but admire creative, super stylish and innovative ways African face mask are being designed.

Since the global crisis started, Hollywood stars like Beyoncé, Naomi Campbell and others have been spotted with gorgeous African prints called Ankara. This unique material is known for its sumptuous collage of colors that portray the culture, tradition, and history of Africans. Very few outfits beat the striking combination of an Ankara face mask with a matching head wrap adorned with glittering stones on a woman.

It is indeed fascinating to watch how African fashion has beautifully evolved; the introduction of the Ankara face mask is just a glimpse of the stunning styles to be born on the continent.

During the recent #WorldMaskWeek movement on social media, another local material called “Adire” usually worn in south western Nigeria was also in the spot light. Like the Ankara material, the Adire also looks exquisite on a face mask.

In the words of Karl Lagerfeld: “Reinvent new combinations of what you already own. Improvise. Become more creative. Not because you have to, but because you want to. Evolution is the secret for the next step.”

By all indications, African designers are certainly ready to take fashion to another level.
