#MBFWCT17 Designer Alert Viniga

“Style… because it’s your first impression.”

Brigitte Da Silva

Brigitte Da Silva, designer at Viniga Atelier’s entire life has been a marriage of fashion and music. Born into the world of fashion and growing up in the industry, she always wanted to be a fashion designer, and with her family rooted in the garment trade, following a career in fashion was an inevitable choice for her.

Excited by the constant hunger for fashion in South Africa, Brigitte is inspired by the enthusiasm that South Africans display when it comes to looking good, following trends and owning their individual looks.

Brigitte believes that there is no beginning and no end to fashion, with everything revolving around it, as a cornerstone of the economy. She hopes that the world of fashion will focus on preserving the environment in years to come, with ethical fashion coming to the fore.

With Audrey Hepburn as her greatest style icon, Brigitte has lived abroad for many years, but maintains that South Africa will always be her greatest inspiration. She is immensely proud to be a South African designer and wave the flag in other parts of the world. Describing her mother, who is a dressmaker, as her very own ‘Coco Chanel,’ she has been Brigitte’s greatest inspiration in becoming the designer she is today, and her drive, passion and invaluable guidance in the industry has shaped Brigitte and her career.

The joy of a Collection coming together is a highlight for Brigitte in her career as a designer, and the tears, heartache, headaches and love for what she does makes every moment worth it. Her customers compliments are her greatest, and Brigitte remembers a time when Drew Barrymore was admiring her window display in Hong Kong, which her neighbour told her about, as the store was still closed.

When she’s not designing, Brigitte loves singing in jazz clubs and cooking up a storm. A recording artist, in addition to being a designer, Brigitte Mitchell, her stage name, has been nominated for a South African Music Award.

Her greatest challenge, as a designer, has been juggling the various roles she has to play. Managing social media and minding the business of fashion is a challenge, but thankfully the passion for fashion overcomes any obstacles along the way. She has learnt a lot over the span of her career and has altered her approach to many areas of the fashion world, making more informed decisions as she gains more experience.

Her current Collection, ‘Chic Asylum,’ is inspired by the current global climate and serves as a stylish statement on how fashion provides refuge from all the political chaos surrounding us.

We look forward to the escapism of ‘Chic Asylum,’ with Viniga at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town 2017 taking place from the 23rd-25th March.
