Merle O’Brien is 1 of 143 women futurists in the world rated among the top 5 in Africa. She leads foresight and design innovation at Creation iLab – a foresight and creative intelligence atelier which helps some of the worlds most admired brands and their partners navigate their approach and footprint in Africa.

She holds a MPhil Future Studies from the University of Stellenbosch Business School, serves as an associate for its Institute for Futures Research as well as for the Future School, the academic arm of the Kedge Innovation Group. Over the past 20 years, she has curated and led award-winning creative campaigns and facilitated innovation thinktanks ahead of C-Suite strategic planning for Brands with a vested interest in the African market.  

She is a Fellow and former President of PRISA, named a Woman in Ideation and Innovation by the Women’s Economic Forum 2018. She also served as deputy President of the World Future Society SA Chapter, a curator for World Design Capital Cape Town 2014, is a member of IDIN – the International Development and Innovation Network based at MIT’s DLab and serves as the only African woman juror for the International A Design Awards.
