David Tlale was born and raised in Vosloorus, a large township located South of Boksburg in the province of Gauteng. Fashion was the furthest thing from Tlale’s mind when he enrolled at the Tswane University of Technology in 1993 to study internal auditing.
There he befriended a group of fashion design students, and fell in love with their coursework. Unhappy with his chosen degree, Tlale dropped out halfway through the first semester, and enrolled in the fashion design program at Vaal University of Technology where he graduated four years later.
David Tlale has been showcased at the Cape Town Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week, and Paris Fashion Week and has also designed collections for major retailers like Edgars. Tlale was a semi-finalist at the South African Fashion Week Elle New Talent Show Competition in 2002. In May 2003, Tlale started working from home running a design studio and has studios in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Tlale is a force to be reckoned with in the fashion scene. His stitches are running from South Africa to the world at large. David showed that dedication, perseverance and persistence will get you on the world ramp from Africa, Paris and New York and any place further than your dreams.
