This Women Month’s African Fashion International will celebrate women Driving their Vision at the 2nd Annual Power To Empower

Johannesburg, South Africa (August 10, 2022) – To commemorate National Women’s Month, Africa Fashion International (AFI) will be hosting the second annual Power To Empower on August 30, 2022, at the Jaguar Land Rover Experience Centre in Lonehill, Bryanston.

Themed “Drive Your Vision”, it will be a celebration of women successfully driving their vision and going against the odds stacked against them.

AFI Founder, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe will be in conversation with some of the inspirational women who make up the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations champions – Banyana Banyana.

The success of Banyana Banyana has once again brought to the forefront how much of a steep hill woman still have to climb to be treated and compensated equally for their efforts. Their conversation will also tackle the glaring issue of pay equity in our society, be it in sports or the corporate world.

The wide-ranging conversation will also include Banyana Banyana’s success story, their key tips on how to win, lessons that could be used in business and in life, how to prepare yourself for the big win, the importance of successfully driving your vision and how to use the power we have to empower other women in our vicinity.

After 2021’s successful inaugural multi-city virtual event, this year Power To Empower will be an in-person event that aims to remind us all of the power we have to empower women in our societies.

National Women’s Month is traditionally a time to commemorate the 20 000 women who marched to Pretoria to protest and pass laws, a time to remind our society of the accomplishments of women and to also reflect on the trailblazing women of the past decades and today. But mostly, it’s a month that reminds us of the importance of creating an environment and capacity that leads to empowered women.

Tragically, the scourge of Gender Based Violence increasingly threatens to make a month that should be about celebrating the impact women make in society, to instead be about the suffering that women continue to face. This has forced the country to talk openly and honestly about the issues that continue to plague women and the immediate need to come up with solutions, no matter how small, to help curb this crisis.

We all have the power to empower through the activities we do in our communities, and organisations.

AFI has over the years created platforms that empower creatives and entrepreneurs in the fashion industry, who are mostly women.

AFI has contributed to the fight against GBV, by donating funds to the government led Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Fund (GBVF), to alleviate the surge of GBV cases that was experienced during the pandemic lockdown phase.

Through the contributions of women who attended last year’s Power To Empower event, AFI and the Motsepe Foundation’s Gender Equality, Wellness and Leadership Unit (GEWAL) further committed to providing in-kind support to more than 1,300 survivors of GBV at 71 shelters in Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Western Cape.

This year’s Power To Empower gives us the opportunity to continue this work with a soon-to-be-launched campaign that will see creatives put their hat in the ring and contribute to fighting against GBV.
