Valentine’s Day Reimagined with the Little Red Dress

This Valentine’s Day let’s ditch the classic little black dress (LBD) and embrace the color of love by wearing a little red dress. This symbol of look-at-me fierceness has been seen on the latest runways of fashion weeks in Joburg and Paris. Designers like Virgil Abloh, Imprint and Gavin Rajah are part of this revival of passion for the color of love.

Of course, during a global pandemic, there are many occasions that need to be reimagined, and Valentine’s day is no exception. In South Africa, current lockdown restrictions still allow a bit of movements and a romantic restaurant dinner is still on the cards. But for safety, you may choose to do something a little more covid-friendly like a candlelit dinner at home.

Whichever option you and your significant other choose, there’s no reason to not, “make it fashion!”

Here are four designer looks to inspire boldness, passion, and romance this Valentine’s Day.

The idea of falling in love was one of the themes in ImprintZA designer, Mzukisi Mabane’s latest collection. The ImprintZA collection, which features the Inkomo Yabenguni Geo Dress in red, form part of the recent AFI Fashion Week Joburg 2020. Embrace the Nguni culture and design this Valentine’s Day and shop this fresh off the runway look at the AFI Boutique.

Not only is this a little red dress, but Lanvin designer, Bruno Sialelli, added a sexy, sheer element to this piece featured in his Spring/Summer collection of Paris Fashion 2021. The collection is centered around the concept of escapism and is reminiscent of the roaring 1920s.

In his Spring 2021 collection for his label Off-White, iconic designer, Virgil Abloh wanted to reimagine style basics, by adding a twist. We love this halter-neck pleated little red dress showcased at this year’s Paris Fashion Week.

This red chantilly lace cocktail dress from Gavin Rajah focuses on comfort, form, and femininity that Rajah wanted his collection to embody. The collection, which was created during the lockdown, was showcased on the AFI Fashion Week Joburg 2020 runway and is available for you to shop online at the AFI Boutique.
