How to Become a Model at Cape Town Fashion Week 2024

AFI Insider
There’s a moment when a model walks onto the runway, the expectant audience watching every strut, mesmerised by not only the walk but by the garment they are showcasing.
The designer watches backstage as the creation they worked on for weeks comes alive. And as the camera flashes start to go off, capturing every angle, fashion editors and buyers quickly take note, knowing this could be the next must-have piece for the season.
It’s a fleeting moment, but in that brief time, the model transforms into something greater—a living embodiment of the designer's vision. That’s the power of a great model.
And now, it’s your chance to be that model.
AFI is hosting Cape Town Fashion Week: The Edit SS24 on 29 to 30 November 2024 at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Racecourse. And there can be no fashion show without models!

What We’re Looking For:
AFI is looking for a new generation of runway stars—models who can make an audience hold their breath, who can turn a designer’s dream into reality with every confident step.
We are looking for models who bring strength, elegance, and presence to the runway. This year’s casting will seek models who can represent the bold new direction of African fashion.
If you’ve ever dreamed of being the face that fashion insiders and cameras can't ignore, this is the ultimate guide to getting on that runway.
What It Takes to Make It
Noelle Graobe, Tshepiso Ralehlathe and Matachley Salmon strutting their iconic walks at Cape Town Fashion Week 2023. They added gravitas to the model line-up and were a joy to watch as they walked down the runway.
The casting panel is looking for more than just a pretty face or long legs. They want models with undeniable presence, confidence, and the ability to own the runway.
Gavin Rajah, the world renowned couturier, says that's the key qualities go beyond just physical attributes.
"A model must have a strong presence on the catwalk, which translates to a sense of confidence and poise in how they carry themselves. Whether male or female, the model should embody elegance and refinement, allowing the garments to shine," he said. "The way a model moves, connects with the audience, and expresses themselves through subtle body language can truly elevate a collection. Precision in posture, a graceful walk, and the ability to make even the simplest garment look dynamic are all qualities that make a model stand out."
It’s not just about walking—it’s about bringing the designer’s vision to life, becoming the perfect canvas for their artistry.
Top Model, Jencey Foje at Cape Town Fashion Week 2023.
Cameroonian top model, Jencey Foje, who has graced countless AFI Fashion Weeks in Cape Town and Joburg and fashion events across the continent, offered a piece of critical advice:
"At the end of the day, it is up to the model to bring the designer’s vision to life. Flawless catwalk techniques will allow their creations to shine, leaving an imprint in the minds of spectators that could result in strong garment sales."
Your runway walk is not just about looking good—it’s about creating an unforgettable moment that leaves an impression long after the show has ended.
Professionalism Is Everything
The Gavin Rajah show at Joburg Fashion Week 2023
Once you’ve captured the panel’s attention, it’s essential to remain professional at all times. Show up on time, be prepared, and come with a positive attitude. Designers and producers are looking for models who can work well under pressure and follow directions seamlessly.
Gavin Rajah summed it up perfectly:
"Professionalism is the cornerstone of a successful modelling career, and it starts with punctuality. Being on time for fittings, rehearsals, and shows demonstrates respect for the team and keeps everything running smoothly. Attitude is equally important—fashion week is fast-paced, and challenges or last-minute changes can arise. Models who maintain a positive, solution-oriented attitude, even under pressure, will not only stand out but also be remembered for future opportunities. Lastly, models should be gracious and respectful to everyone involved, from designers to makeup artists to fellow models. The ability to work collaboratively in a high-pressure environment is what sets professionals apart."
