And this is documented with Africa Fashion International's latest documentary focusing on the AFI Fastrack Prize.
The documentary follows the 2023 finalists as they stand on the precipice of victory. Shot a few days before the winner was announced, the documentary offers an exclusive glimpse into the high-stakes world of the AFI Fastrack Prize.
It documents the 2023 cohort as they navigate the pressures and triumphs of the competition.
Their final challenge? To create a collection that encapsulates the spirit of South Africa's 30 years of democracy – a testament to "30 Years of Fashion Freedom".
These young designers, hailing from diverse backgrounds, are pushed to their creative and entrepreneurial limits- creative a collection that is both groundbreaking, but commercially viable.
The documentary takes the viewer through the ebbs and flows of the finalist's design process, the storytelling, the judging process and the ultimately the finale.
Viewers will see the finalists balancing technical skill with business acumen, learning to navigate the complex world of fashion. From sourcing fabrics to building brand identity, every decision is crucial.
It's an intimate look into the lives of these aspiring designers, capturing their hopes, fears, and triumphs. It’s a story of resilience, creativity, and the unwavering pursuit of a fashion dream.
The documentary also features AFI Founder and Executive Chair, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, who goes into the history of the AFI Fastrack Prize.
Other notable names featured are judges, Felipe Mazibuko, Aspasia Karras, Khotatso Tsotetsi, Kiba Bam and AFI Fastrack Prize 2021 winner, Shamyra Moodley.
The documentary culminates in a high-octane finale, where the finalists present their collections to a panel of industry experts. The pressure is immense, but the rewards are equally substantial.
