House of Nala latest menswear collection that defines timeless elegance

By Buhle Mbonambi

In a sea of bold, brash colours and clashing prints, House of Nala’s menswear collection first presented at the Durban July, was a refreshing change.

As the models glided down the runway during the AFI Fashion Experience with Gemelli at the Durban July, heads turned. The muted tones provided respite from the kaleidoscope of shades that was found outside.

It is a collection that displays the versatility and sophistication of African luxury. This collection is perfect for the House of Nala man who values quality, style, and heritage.

In an interview with African Fashion International, Thulani Mlambo, House of Nala’s menswear product developer, spoke about the inspiration behind the collection, which has been aptly created for the transitional season between winter and spring.

What was the inspiration for the latest House of Nala menswear collection?
This collection was inspired by the House of Nala man's need for versatile pieces that he can wear in any season. The House of Nala man is a stylish gentleman who knows how to dress for any occasion. He is always up to date on the latest trends, but he also appreciates classic pieces that will never go out of style. The colour scheme for this collection is brown, beige, white, navy, and gold. These colours are timeless and elegant, and they can be dressed up or down to suit any occasion.

As you were showcasing at the AFI Fashion Experience, how much of the Durban July theme- Out of this World- was incorporated into your concept for this collection, if at all?
This collection is all about striking silhouettes that capture the essence of the House of Nala customer. I designed each piece with a commercial appeal, but also with a touch of creativity and flair. The highlight of the collection is our stunning gold and navy brocade embellished suit, that dazzles with dripping gold details. I was inspired by the fluidity and shine of Mercury, and I wanted to create a similar effect with gold embellishments that cascade from the shoulder. I found the perfect fabric that matched my vision and brought this showstopper to life.

House of Nala Beige Cargo Trousers

SHOP: House of Nala Beige Cargo Trousers are functional fashion. Both feature the on trend cargo pocket and side panel details that allow you to store all your essentials.

How was the fabric selection process for your collection?
I wanted to go with colours that will speak to the trans-seasonal element in the collection. I found that beige and brown to be quite classic, particularly for menswear. It is also about feeling and which fabric speaks to you the most. I went with brushed fleece, brocade, and woven suiting for the collection.

Brushed Fleece Trench Coat and Brushed Fleece Trousers

SHOP: House of Nala's Brushed Fleece Trench Coat and Brushed Fleece Trousers are crafted from a luxurious brushed fleece fabric in a subtle brown, beige, black, and nude print.

How do you think your designs highlight the changing perception of what it means to be an African fashion designer in the luxury industry?
I feel like the designs showcased in the collection show quite a commercial element to the African luxury industry also going into a quieter luxury feel. African luxury is taking quite an interesting and needed direction. As African designers, we are going against the stereotype of what the rest of the world sees as African luxury and creating a new representation. Showcasing African luxury does not mean you are restricted to using prints but rather also playing with silhouettes and colours.

The House of Nala Trans-Seasonal collection is now available for purchase online and in-store. Shop the latest looks from the Home of African Luxury on the AFI Online Store or at House of Nala Sandton City.
