Cape Town came alive with sustainable style at the 2024 Earthshot Prize Awards, on Wednesday, November 6, where some of the world's most famous faces showed off the best of sustainable fashion choices on the longest green carpet in history.
Nigeria’s Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and South Africa’s Moozlie hosted the carpet, setting the stage for a night dedicated to celebrating sustainable fashion.
The event was held in the Earthshot Prize Dome, an eco-friendly marquee next to the Cape Town Stadium, designed to host more events in the future.
Guests were asked to focus on sustainable fashion by wearing reused, recycled, or low-impact materials, shining a light on local designers.
Nomzamo Mbatha, the official ambassador for Earthshot Week, impressed in an elegant butter yellow gown showcasing that was the perfect mix of environmentally friendly fashion. Designed by Ghanaian fashion designer, Aisha Ayensu of Christie Brown, the dress was a collaboration with 2023 Earthshot Prize finalist, Colorifix.
Supermodel, Winnie Harlow, who will present an award during the ceremony, wore a chocolate brown vintage leather dress by American fashion brand, Luar.
South African actress and radio presenter, Hope Mbhele, wore a lime green gown with shweshwe print, while Tanzania's Diamond Platnumz chose to look like the rock star he is, wearing jeans and an ox-blood red leather jacket.
Bonang Matheba, the evening's co-host turned to her frequent collaborator, choosing to wear a stunning gold sequinned gown by Biji La Maison inspired by Johannesburg, the City of Gold.
Her co-host, the Grammy, Emmy, and Tony award-winning actor, Billy Porter, wore a graphic bird-print suit by South African designer, David Tlale.
Vampire Diaries actress, Nina Dobrev wore a red gown by Cushnie, while supermodel, Heidi Klum wore a tangerine gown which was a vintage Halston!
Award-winning fashion stylist, Phupho Gumede was also spotted on the green carpet in a purple suit, while Tobe Nwigwe, who was one of the performers, wore a sage suit with his partner, Fat.
Founded by Prince William in 2020, the Earthshot Prize recognises five people each year for their efforts to protect the environment.
This year’s winners, selected from 15 finalists, each receive £1 million (around R22.9 million) to support their work.
Performers will include Lebo M, the Ndlovu Youth Choir, Davido, Diamond Platnumz and Tobe Nwigwe.
