AFI Insider
It was the biggest night in music in South Africa and the stars came out in fine fashion. Encouraging to see was how many resorted to South African designers instead of the usual showcase of Western brands.
With the theme being “Proudly South African chic”, they really did not have an option but to work with designers who represent South African style and fashion.
We also loved to see the stars wear the latest trends on the red carpet. These were some of our favourites looks on the SAMAs red carpet
Suit Game
You can never go wrong with a well-made suit on the red carpet, and no one did it better than rising star, Filah Lah Lah. As always, she made a statement in a grey oversized suit by popular fashion brand, Boyde, choosing to go the risqué route with a black bra and unbuttoned blazer. She committed to the look with her silver-tinged make-up and accessories.
Radio presenter and musician Harrison Mkhize went the ultra-tailored way, with a cobalt blue tuxedo with a matching satin shirt.
Ringo Madlingozi, who was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award during the ceremony, also impressed in a dark navy suit with matching shirt. He chose to pop his shirt collar, which was an interesting choice that gave his outfit an edge.
Metallics
Metallics had a major moment at the SAMAs, with TV presenter, Kuhle Adams and rapper, Nadia Nakai leading the charge in gold. Kuhle’s mini-dress with plunging neckline and train, was designed by the AFI Atelier and was all about celebrating her body.
Nadia Nakai turned to Gert-Johan Coetzee with a sequinned dress that was inspired by the solar system.
Classic Beauty
R&B singer, Ayanda Jiya went with a very classic look choosing to wear an asymmetrical velvet gown with a slit and a bodice with diamante encrusted edges.
Minnie Dlamini, who hosted the ceremony, also turned to black, wearing an evening gown designed by the AFI Atelier, with subtle beading a black and red cape. She had a moment on the red carpet when she was revealing the look, akin to a matador whipping his cape at a bull. She later wore the dress on stage during the ceremony.
Big Brother Titans star, Khosi Thwala wore a bottled-green gown and looked statuesque.
Neutrals
Amapiano star, Nia Pearl, took a decidedly risqué turn on the red carpet in a body-hugging off-white gown that caused a stir. Actress and reality TV star, Tarina Patel also wore an off-white gown, which was elegantly demure and featured a column skirt with feathers, showing once again that she was a pro on the red carpet.
