Step into the Winter Season with Style: Unveiling House of Nala's Pearls of a Red Winter Collection
By Ranji Mangcu
African Fashion International’s House of Nala brand provides customers with a lavish, unisex offering of luxury garments. Trading in casual attire as well as daring couture pieces, their mission is to showcase the exquisite mastery of African fashion.
In a rich, ruby-red and black colour scheme littered with pearls, in-house designers Keneuoe Mhletswa and Thulani Mlambo embodied 1960’s glamour through clean lines and impeccable craftsmanship.
Embodying two different aesthetics House of Nala’s menswear and womenswear collections were tied together by a colour scheme of red and black. The menswear collection was characterised by loosely tailored, red tweed pieces interpreted into unconventional cuts, including a pair of wide-legged, low-hanging dungarees.
Here, the designers share the story of the collection:
Red velvet boxed dress with panel detailing and cover buttons. This is a quirky dress with an exaggerated peter pan collar. The dress does not have pockets but has pocket cover flaps for styling purposes.
“The collection was inspired by the upcoming winter season. We wanted to show power and confidence in the collection. Red attracts attention and is associated with strong and passionate emotions. We wanted to channel those feelings for this collection. This collection takes the direction of bold, power and confidence. We wanted to create a presence for the wearer.”

“We selected red as the primary colour for our collection. Magenta is one of this season’s top tones and so we opted to include a colour in the magenta family.”
House of Nala’s unisex red and black tweed ankle length coat with cover buttons and belt. The coat is fully lined.
“We chose velvet, faux fur, Ponte De Roma knit and tweed for our collection – materials that are perfect for winter and exude a sophisticated and opulent appearance to the garments.”
House of Nala’s black velvet dress with pearled embellishment on the front of the dress and sleeves. The dress is a fit and flare silhouette with a high turtleneck collar and elasticated bubble sleeves.
“We took inspiration from the 60s and 80s for our silhouettes and fabric selection. To stay true to the time periods, we chose tweed as a nod to the decades’ popularity with this material. Furthermore, pearls were included as decorations on our garments, signifying both elegance and liberty.”
